Celestial Navigation - Near Solstice

Updated: Feb 18, 2022

The winter solstice was yesterday. The sun is now northbound! Even though we are land-bound during the schooner overhaul, we still practice our celestial navigation skills. In these photos, we are practicing a Dip Short of the Horizon sun-sight with the newly acquired Tamaya sextant. The resulting Line of Position was a respectable 1.3NM off the actual GPS position...that’s good for a dip short sight when the horizon appears to be diagonal!
